Digital book sales showed the most rapid growth in book publishing in 2010, according to The Publishers Association.
The organisation’s Statistics Yearbook 2010 found that total consumer digital sales (including consumer e-books, downloads and audiobooks) increased by 318%, from £4m in 2009 to £16m last year.Digital book sales showed the most rapid growth in book publishing in 2010, according to The Publishers Association.
This compared with total book sales in the UK of £3.1bn – an increase of 2% in terms of value, but the volume of sales fell by 3% to 739m units.
The annual research found that the digital publishing market is 6% of total UK publisher sales. The overall size of the digital market stands at £180m.
While academic and professional sales, which have led the digital charge, amount to 72% of all digital sales, sales of consumer e-books and downloads have leaped from 2% to 11%.
