Chicago Tribune drops tabloid edition of paper

 Chicago Tribune reporting:
The Chicago Tribune's traditional broadsheet edition is coming back to newsstands next week, replacing the short-lived tabloid version, according to a memo sent out by the newspaper to its employees on Wednesday.
Expanded in June, the full-sized edition is already received by more than 90 percent of Tribune subscribers, according to the company. The recent enhancements, which include additional news pages and a new design, are driving the move to a uniform format.
The tabloid has been available only for street sale, not subscriptions.
"We believe those enhancements, which included the addition of 44 full news pages per week, are best displayed in the larger page afforded by the broadsheet format," Gerry Kern, senior vice president and editor of the Tribune, said in a statement Wednesday. "This effort will extend our position as the Chicago region's premier source of news and information."
The elimination of the tabloid will help the Tribune streamline operations, reduce costs, and focus on its core broadsheet edition and new digital initiatives, according to the company.
